HCB coach Don MacAdam had to call on the injured Paul Zanette again and left Denny Deanesi at home as a surplus striker. The white-red coach initially had to watch as the KAC took over the game and took the lead in the fourth minute through ex-NHL crack Thomas Pöck. As a result, the HCB tried primarily to score goals through quick counterattacks. This tactic almost would have worked if Carnevale and Keller hadn't lost their nerve in the one-on-one with KAC goalie Tuokkola. In the final seconds of the second period, the guests still managed to score: Derek Nesbitt grabbed a rebound from close range.

In the middle section, two teams faced each other and dueled on equal terms. Klagenfurt took control of the game, while Bozen caused danger with quick counterattacks and forced Tuokkola to make brilliant saves several times.
