HC Eppan: Jari Helle replaces Mike Ellis

Helle is expected in Eppan on Wednesday. The Finnish trainer was born on August 10, 1962 in Tampere. His father Seppo, who was himself a player and coach (he led Ilves Tampere to the championship title in 1962), introduced him to ice hockey as a child. During his youth, Jari Helle was one of the most talented young players in his country and won European Championship silver with Finland's U1979 national team in 18. However, a persistent back injury forced him to end his career very early: at the age of 22, he had to give up his skates after two operations. In 1988, Helle began his coaching career and spent ten years at various Finnish clubs. Between 1989 and 1990, Helle, who received the Finnish top coaching diploma in 1992, also worked as a European scout for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In 1998 he came to South Tyrol. He coached Kaltern until 2001, where he became Serie B champion in his third year. In the summer of 2001 he moved to Vipiteno in Serie A, where he was released after just a few weeks. A month later he joined HC Eppan and also won the Serie B championship with the “Pirates”. Helle then stayed in Lapland for two years before returning to Kaltern in the 2004/05 season. In January 2006, HC Eppan signed him again, then he worked as a coach at his new hometown club Kotka. Here too he won the championship and brought Kotka from the third to the second Finnish league. In March 2008, Helle came to HC Bozen as a “firefighter” before the play-off games. He succeeded Doug McKay and made the White-Reds the sole record champions again after eight unsuccessful years. The following year, Helle repeated this feat and, in addition to the championship title, also won the Supercup and Italian Cup. However, he was no longer confirmed at Bolzano. Helle first trained in Kaltern last year, but returned to HCB in January 2010. With the white and red he made it to the play-off semi-finals, but was then eliminated against Ritten. Now he is back in Eppan, for the third time in his career.

HC Eppan: Jari Helle replaces Mike Ellis

HC Eppan Internorm has parted ways with Mike Ellis and hired Finn Jari Helle as its new coach. Ellis led the “Pirates” to the Serie A2 championship title last year, but was only in fourth place in this year’s championship, far behind the leading trio of Val Gardena, Vipiteno and Neumarkt.
