HCB newcomer Pitschieler: “I have to be patient”

For many, 2020 may have been one to forget because of Corona, but not for Simon Pitschieler. In the summer, the center from St. Ulrich fulfilled a small dream and moved to HC Bozen. In the last three seasons, the newly minted 23-year-old has made a lasting impression at HC Gröden in the Alps Hockey League, playing 125 games despite his young age and scoring 62 times and scoring 24 goals. The call from the state capital was therefore only a matter of time and came after the abruptly canceled 2019/20 Corona season.

The new season in the ICE Hockey League is now two and a half months old, one month of which the HCB cracks were put out of action by Corona. The game is now back in full swing - with HC Bozen who have finally become one of the top favorites for the title. “We are a really strong team. I’ve learned a lot in the last three months,” explains Simon Pitschieler. “I expected not to play every game.” Simon Pitschieler Pitschieler's debut at HCB was impressive. Because Corona had already left its mark on the HCB squad, the man from Val Gardena was one of the regulars at the beginning of the season and did more than well in the first ICEHL games. Recently, however, the offensive crack has repeatedly had to sit in the stands or on the substitutes' bench. “Logically, I would rather play,” said Pitschieler, who certainly understands the current situation. “But I'm young and new to the team, so I expected not to play every game. I’m glad I got my ice time at the beginning, I can build on that.”

“Coach Greg Ireland talks to me a lot and we also talk about this situation. I just have to be patient – and when I have the chance, I want to make the most of it. My time will come,” said Pitschieler, who has already settled in well in Bolzano – and is impressed by the team. “You can learn something from every player,” says the young ice hockey star, who is particularly fond of the local players. “They are the heart of the team, hold the team together and have played a large part in the success of the last few years.” A second mainstay At the moment, Pitschieler's focus is entirely on ice hockey. Nevertheless, the young man from Val Gardena wants to build up a second mainstay. “In March I will complete my studies in tourism, sports and event management at the University of Bolzano. After that, I would also like to do a master’s degree. As is well known, there is always a certain risk in sport - your career can quickly be over because of an injury, for example. That’s why a second source of support is always important.”

For now, the priority is ice hockey and HC Bozen. “We are at a good point and want to keep going. The coach always talks about a development in our game: We want to continue and refine this throughout the year." The next chance for this will come on Saturday against Bratislava (at 17.30 p.m.) and Sunday against Vienna (at 16.30 p.m.), if The prominent newcomer Andreas Bernard will also celebrate his debut for Bozen .
