Hockey: David Tschirner dreams of the DEL

Sports fan, globetrotter and dreamer, in a positive sense, is how David Tschirner describes himself. The 29-year-old from Leifer, who recently distinguished himself as one of the best linesmen in Serie A, has now acquired a referee license for the Bundesliga and the DEL he is about to get involved in top European ice hockey.

Tschirner will give up his job as a tennis instructor at the Park Hotel Holzner in Oberbozen and leave South Tyrol for Ismaning. “I will move to Bavaria with my girlfriend. I am overjoyed to have made this decision and hope to be able to achieve my sporting goals,” Tschirner announced.

Sport is in his blood “I love the sport. I started playing tennis when I was three and a half years old, but I never decided on one discipline and ended up playing ice hockey, among other things. I was on the ice as a player in Laives for ten years before I became interested in refereeing. My colleague Daniel Gamper accompanied me to the first training courses, and from then on my career was predetermined.” Two years later he made his debut as a linesman in Serie A2, and just a short time later he made the jump to the top league.

A key experience Tschirner soon traveled all over Europe as an international referee. In 2010 at the Continental Cup in Asiago he met the German referee boss Gerhard Lichtenegger. “Since then there has been a lively exchange between the two of us. In August of this year he made it possible for me to take part in a seminar in Füssen. As part of these conferences, I took the German referee exam and finally received my license.”

The future Tschirner will be allowed to whistle in the DEL and the 2nd Bundesliga in the future. “Initially I will be playing in the second division, but I hope that I will soon be able to step on the ice in the upper house,” says the 29-year-old from the lower country, who was able to get a taste of ice hockey for the first time in Germany in the summer months: “I have have already officiated four test matches. The pace of play is not comparable to that of Serie A. While in Italy there are protests over many decisions, in Germany one expects the referee to take consistent action in controversial situations and does not question his judgments.” Before his departure to Bavaria, Tschirner would like to send a special thank you to referee chief Renzo Stenico and his friend and long-time colleague Ulrich Pardatscher.

Now he is ready to start a new phase in his life: “As a teenager, I moved to Orlando to work at Disneyworld. What sounded crazy turned out to be an incredibly important experience that opened my horizons. Now I want to take a new step and take on the challenge in Germany.”
