Alex Trivellato: “I was completely amazed at first in Sweden”

With an unfortunate 0-1 defeat by Västerås IK at home against title candidate BIK Karlskoga, Trivellato said goodbye to the playoffs of the second highest Swedish league last week. It was the third quarter-final defeat in the fourth game for the defender from St. Jakob/Leifers and his teammates. “We fulfilled our goal by reaching the quarter-finals, but secretly we were perhaps expecting a little more from Västerås,” says Trivellato, summing up after his season in the city of 100.000 inhabitants in southern Sweden.

The 28-year-old has been one of the top performers at the second division club since his move in February. He recorded 18 assists in 13 games. “But I was denied a goal. That really bothers me,” said the ambitious defensive player, for whom the main thing in Scandinavia was to regain the “joy of ice hockey”. The previous months were characterized by an extraordinary commotion. With a little distance, Trivellato summarizes soberly: “First there was the great Corona uncertainty, then the wonderful weeks at home at HC Bozen. There I was able to stand on the ice with several friends and experience a winning mentality in the dressing room for the first time in a long time. Then we went back to Krefeld, where suddenly nothing was the same as it had been for all the years before.” Total chaos reigned in Krefeld The Unterlander had made his home on the Lower Rhine for four years, he had moved into an apartment with his girlfriend and was regularly the player with the most ice time on the DEL team. “But I just have to say, this team was too bad for the DEL. First and foremost, I hold management responsible. After all, I was only one of 4 players who left the ship within a short period of time. Something must be going wrong. Under these conditions, in this environment, with these results, as a player you could no longer present yourself to other clubs. When the offer came from Sweden, I didn’t hesitate for a second,” says Trivellato honestly.

A completely new career phase began from one day to the next in Scandinavia. “I was overjoyed to see how ice hockey is lived here. “A real surge of energy went through my body,” remembers the South Tyrolean, who also found a completely different world away from the ice. “In Bolzano and Krefeld we were constantly tested and had a strict hygiene protocol. Everything was different in Sweden. There was never much of an impact on the pandemic here; people dealt with it completely differently. I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but I was really amazed when I arrived.”

The coronavirus was already rampant in Sweden's second division before the start of the season, which is why the crucial phase of the season could sometimes be completed without game postponements. That's why there was hardly any talk about the pandemic, says Trivellato, who was also able to “enjoy his Scandinavian adventure to the fullest” and who particularly remembers the away trips because “they often took us through breathtaking landscapes for hours.” “HC Bozen is always an issue for me” Alex Trivellato It is still unclear whether the adventure will continue in the fall. “Västerås would like to keep me and I can easily imagine staying,” says Trivellato. However, he wants to wait and see whether a club from Europe's top leagues expresses interest. And a return to HC Bozen? “This is always an issue for me. However, I have to say that my short time in Sweden had a big impact on me. Ice hockey has an incredible importance here, comparable to that of football at home,” enthuses Trivellato.

However, a return to South Tyrol is still on the cards soon, at the latest before preparations for the World Cup begin. “We still haven’t received any dates from the association. But I'll soon be traveling to South Tyrol via Krefeld, relaxing there for a few days and then focusing all my attention on the World Cup." And who knows, maybe Trivellato can use the tournament in Latvia to continue advertising on its own behalf and for... Reach unimagined heights at the end of this rollercoaster season.
