Bitter: Foxes lose after madness for seconds

The HCB went into the encounter with the same line configuration as on Sunday in Game 2. In general, a lot of things in the Klagenfurt town hall were initially reminiscent of the most recent meeting in Bolzano, because once again it was the KAC that really revved up its engine - this time even at a much higher speed. Bolzano was constantly busy with defensive work. In the first third, the “Red Jackets” fired more than twice as many shots as the Foxes (13:6 shots). Manuel Ganahl and Kevin Kapstad had the best chances, but both were denied by Pekka Tuokkola's brilliant save in the Bolzano goal.

The big weak points in this phase of the game remained the high number of lost face-offs and the lack of efficiency in the power play. At the same time, the defensive bar in front of Tuokkola held tight even when he was twice outnumbered. So it happened that the Foxes continued to gain courage towards the end of the second third and stood up to the Austrian record champions. Only when Mike Angelidis had to go into the “cool box” again and Matias Sointu followed him a little later did Tuokkola come under constant fire again. However, the Finnish goalkeeper proved to be a rock solid time and time again. He drove Andrew Kozek and Thomas Hundertpfund to desperation with his saves. It was only the eighth penalty kill - Mat Clark was sitting outside - that ultimately proved fatal: 17 seconds before the end, the puck bounced off Chris Carlisle's skate after a long shot and from there back onto the goal line. Jonathan Rheault just had to push in more. Then the madness began. Oleksuk had to go to the penalty box immediately after the goal and Tuokkola made room for a fifth field player. Everything seemed lost for HC Bozen when Austin Smith hit a dream pass to Alex Petan and he shot from distance a fraction of a second before the siren. The puck slipped under KAC goalie David Madlener's arm. To be on the safe side, the referees used video evidence, but the hit counted. 1:1! Renewal!

Overtime then developed into a real thriller. First Klagenfurt was better, then Bozen. Just when an equilibrium seemed to be establishing itself on the ice, the Carinthians struck. In the eighth minute of extra time, Manuel Ganahl moved down the left wing towards the Bolzano goal and flicked the puck into the far corner. Tuokkola was defeated and Bolzano's second defeat in this series was sealed.
