Bolzano conqueror KAC after a “sweep” in the final

Record champions KAC closed the bag on Friday in the fourth game of the “best of seven” semi-final series against the Graz 99ers. With a 4-2 home win in the Erste Bank Eishockey-Liga over the Styrians, the Red Jackets achieved the “sweep” (promotion without defeat) and are in the final. They have to wait at least until Tuesday for their opponent, because Salzburg equalized to 2-2 against the Capitals.

In Klagenfurt, the Graz team initially started aggressively in front of a sold-out crowd and wanted to at least aim for an “honorary victory” in the series as early as possible. In the 10th minute, Matt Garbowsky, after work by Yellow Horn, gave the Styrians a 1-0 lead, the first lead in this series for the 99ers. After a penalty against the KAC, Garbowsky provided an assist for Daniel Oberkofler, the latter netting in the power play in the 14th minute to make it 2-0. But just a minute later, Thomas Koch also scored in the majority.

After the evenly balanced first half of the game, the Carinthians took more and more control. In terms of results, however, the turnaround only happened towards the end of the second third: Nicholas Petersen in the 37th minute and Matthew Neal in the 40th minute turned the match around after a 0-2 deficit to take a 3-2 lead. The powerplay-strong Red Jackets scored all three goals in the majority. After the second break, the Graz team were initially unable to capitalize on a 5:3 advantage from the 45th minute onwards, and after Andrew Kozek made it 49:4 in the 2th minute, the Styrians began to think about the end of the season.

Bulls equalize in the series The Carinthians, who are aiming for their 31st championship title, were able to celebrate after a somewhat sleepy start and sit back for the time being. The Vienna Capitals, who started the series against Red Bull Salzburg with two wins, suffered their second defeat in a row in Salzburg. The guests initially headed for win number three when Taylor Vause made it 21-9 with his 1st goal of the season in the 0th minute. Just three minutes later, the Viennese were lucky when Duncan hit the bar for the home team. The “Bulls” dominated until the first break, but the Caps’ lead held.

But right after the first break, Salzburg equalized from a counterattack by Dominique Heinrich (22'). The Viennese increased to 36-2 through Julian Großlercher in the 1th minute, but Salzburg again equalized through Brant Harris in the 39th minute after a shot from full speed.

The game continued like this in the final third: Großlercher gave the Viennese the lead for the third time with his second goal in the 47th minute, and Alexander Rauchwald (51st) equalized for the third time. After the 3:3, they headed for the third extra time in this series, but this time things turned out differently: thanks to goals from Raphael Herburger (58th) and John Hughes (60th/empty net), the Salzburg team managed to equalize for the second :2 in the series, which now continues on Sunday (2 p.m.) in Vienna and can only be decided on Tuesday at the earliest.

The first finalist of the EBEL Championship 2018/19 has been determined. The KAC defeated the Graz4ers 99-4 in the 2th semi-final on Friday evening.
