Vinschgau Cup: HCB narrowly loses to Nuremberg

Debut in the Vinschgau Cup 2022 for HCB Südtirol Alperia against the Nürnberg IceTigers. It was the first “maturity test” of this preseason for the Foxes against a strong opponent from the DEL. Coach Glen Hanlon was able to use the recovered Culkin again, but had to do without Glück and Bernard, who were ill, and the injured Cole Hults. Sam Harvey was used as the starting goalie, with young Matteo Sulmona acting as backup.

Bozen came into the match better at the beginning of the middle section and gained the first opportunities through a counterattack in front of Frank, whose shot ended in Treutle's catching hand and a combination between Hults, Miceli and Frattin. However, Nuremberg scored the second goal: Stoa scored after a solo from Ustorf and a rebound from Harvey.

Bozen tried to equalize, Frigo on the left side and Halmo with an individual effort failed at the Nuremberg goalkeeper. Bozen couldn't take advantage of another power play, but risked the third goal through Fox, who came straight from the penalty box. After Dalhuisen placed a back pass from Hults with a bomb shot next to the opponent's goal, it was Bayern's turn again: Sheehy made it 3-1 from a tight angle. Shortly before the second halftime break, Nuremberg couldn't make any impact in a power play, the Foxes countered with a strong penalty kill.

The White-Reds came out of the locker room determined in the final period and tried long-range shots until after three minutes the young wild ones scored the next goal with a dream combination: the puck ran like clockwork from Mantenuto via Kasslatter to Felicetti, who successfully netted. Bozen continued to press and Hults tested Treutle from the high slot. After another chance for Culkin, Leonhardt escaped on the counterattack, but was unable to outwit Harvey; on the other side, a slapshot from Dalhuisen also failed to find its way into the Nuremberg goal.

Two minutes before the end of the game, the White Reds had a great opportunity to equalize: the Nuremberg Welsh picked up a bench penalty and coach Hanlon immediately brought in the sixth field player. However, the White Reds' efforts were in vain, with Culkin and Dalhuisen wasting the last Bozen opportunities.
