Bolzano derby kings take Bruneck

The two South Tyrolean ice hockey worlds in the ICE Hockey League have never drifted as far apart as they did this evening: Red and White celebrated a 3-0 victory and thus extended their lead in the table, Black and Yellow have more to do after their fourth defeat in the fourth derby ever worry about participating in the playoffs. It was the third shutout of the season for Bolzano goalkeeper Sam Harvey.

Unlike in the previous duels of the season, the two-time ICE champion was in no way superior to his arch-rival from the East. Quite the opposite: The HCP had significantly more of the game and created a large number of chances to score, but there was always a Bolzano skate or stick in the way. Above all, there was no way around HCB defender Ryan Culkin. Bolzano acted purposefully, concretely and callously.

For the almost 400 fans who traveled from the state capital, there was two reasons to be happy that evening: On the one hand, they celebrated the 150th victory in the 190th derby against HC Pustertal, and on the other hand, they were happy about the simultaneous 5:6 defeat from pursuers Innsbruck against Vienna. This means the lead at the top increases to four points. On Sunday (16 p.m.) the Foxes welcome Fehérvar at home.

The wolves, for their part, continue to have Asiago breathing down their necks. The HCP only has one point as a cushion for the first non-pre-playoff place, but at the same time they have played three games more than their pursuers from Veneto. And it won't be any easier for the Valtonen team: Third Salzburg will be visiting Brunico on Sunday (18 p.m.).
