The Foxes are having a bitter start

HC Bozen was dispatched 5-1 in the first competitive game of the 2019/20 season. Although the 2.800 spectators saw some very good approaches and the result was clearly too high, one clear realization prevailed after the home defeat: HCB coach Clayton Beddoes still has to do a lot of work if his team wants to be the big player in the league this season stand up to it.

The first appearance in the ice wave began with an ice-cold shower: After a few seconds of play, Tim Daly lost the puck on the blue line, Chad Kolarik gratefully accepted the gift and shot unhindered to make it 1-0. The Foxes initially found no answer to the opening goal by the former US international and last year's DEL champion. The Bulls played the White and Reds against the wall for minutes. They seemed jittery and confused. It was thanks to the recovered Leland Irving that it was “only” 0-1 going into the first break. Hargrove's debut goal makes the fans cheer The only thing that hasn't been written off by the Foxes up to this point is their tireless efforts. This, coupled with the unconditional support of their own fans, who recognized the difficult moment and stood behind their protégés like a wall, meant that Bozen became bolder after the restart and met their previously superior opponents on an equal footing. Halfway through the game, the otherwise colorless Colton Hargrove rewarded the Foxes for their commitment: as he followed up, he pushed the disc over the line to make it 1-1. The home team's strongest phase now began, and - also with the help of the advancing Daly and Kevin Spinozzi - they managed to put the Mozartstadters in trouble again and again. The second goal came all the more bitterly eight seconds before the second third siren. After a precise Holloway cross pass, it was Kolarik who scored again.

The effects of this blow to the neck only really became noticeable after the restart, when the HCB tried to get back into the game, but could no longer find a way to deal with Salzburg, who were now calm. These ultimately increased the result significantly towards the end. John Hughes, Nico Feldner and Dominique Heinrich used every little space in the Bolzano defense to score. The 1:5 didn't reflect the course of the game, but it wasn't undeserved due to the guests' strong starting third. HCB Südtirol Alperia had really imagined the start of the season to be different. Coach Clayton Beddoes' newly formed team put in a passionate performance, but still received a good beating from Red Bull Salzburg.
