This HC Bozen is a mystery

What's wrong with HC Bozen? Many a regular stadium-goer in the state capital might be asking themselves this question these days. You can't deny the commitment of the players, nor the quality of play that shines through again and again. But how can it be that a dozen mistakes creep in, both on defense and offense, game after game, that the team never plays at a high level over the full distance and that they incur a series of unnecessary penalties? Kai Suikkanen has to find answers to these questions - and quickly so that he can pull the lever before the decisive phase of the season and prevent the five-point lead in 7th place from melting any further.

The HCB coach used the same lineup against Salzburg as two days before in Innsbruck. He only made a change in goal: backup Jake Smith was allowed to replace Leland Irving. For example, in the 23rd minute, when Angelo Miceli directed a Campbell shot into the net to make it 2-2. Although Bolzano was now much more dominant, the runner-up from Mozardstadt was still able to set the course for victory in the second third. Only shortly after the equalizer, the puck came via a detour to Bulls crack Martin Stajnoch, who sent it into the top corner. Before the break, veteran Thomas Raffl increased the score to 4:2. At this point, the Foxes had to resort to penalty killing once again, as the petty referees had previously sent Alex Petan off the ice for holding.

Not much happened in the final period - apart from the fact that Bolzano had to play outnumbered for five and a half of the remaining 20 minutes due to unnecessary penalties. A successful comeback was no longer possible under these circumstances, even though the Foxes didn't give up until the end.

Next Friday, the KAC, which defeated Zagreb 12-0 on Sunday, will be in the ice wave. Until then, urgent work must be done to solve the HCB puzzle. HCB Südtirol Alperia remains without a win in the new year: The champions had to admit defeat to the “vice” from Salzburg 3.200:2 in the ice wave in front of 4 spectators. But more than the result, the behavior of the HCB cracks is something to consider.
