This time the overtime pays off

For the first time ever, the Foxes played against laggards Bratislava on Saturday evening in the Ondrej Nepela Arena. In the end, they took two important points from Slovakia: Dan Catenacci & Co. defeated the league newcomers 5:4 after a penalty shootout. The people of Bolzano have thus regained their self-confidence and are prepared for the next top game against the Vienna Capitals: This will take place on Sunday at 16.30 p.m. in Vienna.

While the HCB was still playing its opponents to the ground after the end of the Corona-related break, the fatigue is now gradually becoming noticeable: Bozen played its 14th game in 32 days against Bratislava. It goes without saying that the engine started to stutter a bit and that a lot was allowed against the latecomer to the table. There were some personnel changes before the start: Daniel Frank and Ben Youds didn't even make the trip to Eastern Europe due to injuries, but Mike Halmo made his comeback. The biggest change was in goal: last-minute newcomer Andreas Bernard was not in the box, but Freddy Cloutier replaced the injured Leland Irving and Justin Fazio.

The 39-year-old Cloutier, who was also signed by Bozen just a few days ago, noticed the lack of training on his debut. The ex-Asiago goalkeeper missed four of 14 shots - a mixed ratio. So it's quite possible that Andreas Bernard will make his debut on Sunday against Vienna. The home team's answer came promptly and in the form of a double blow in the power play: First, Bratislava's best, Filip Ahl, was spot on when Di Perna misdirected an opponent's shot, then Miklik's shot slipped over the line in slow motion - both times the Slovaks had a man more on the ice. After the break, Catenacci hit a Plastino shot to make it 2-2 (21st), after which the Foxes failed to take the lead several times when they had the advantage (including 5-on-3).

Bratislava scored the lead at the beginning of the final third thanks to Culkin's rebound (43'). The Foxes then turned the match around in no time: Because Plastino (after an irresistible solo effort) and Catenacci (after a pass from Halmo) turned the result on its head within 38 seconds, the HCB already looked like the winner. Shortly before the end, Bezak scored to make it 4:4. The extra time didn't bring anything, but Gazley's fine hand in the penalty shootout decided the match in favor of the Talferstädter and gave the Bolzano team the extra point.
