A young Canadian at Bernard's side

“The model with a fixed starting goalie and backup is disappearing,” said the HCB boss Dieter Knoll made it clear in the course of Andreas Bernard's contract extension. As is now certain, Samuel Harvey, a goalie, will form the goalkeeping tandem with the Kalterer, who is somewhat inexperienced but brings a lot of potential to the Talferstadt. Born in the Quebec region, Harvey made his first steps in the hockey world with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). In 2019 he moved to the University of New Brunswick before his professional career began in 2020. Harvey signed with the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he played seven games. Last season he moved to the Fort Wayne Komets in the third-tier ECHL. He had 41 games (including 26 wins) and a catch rate of over 91 percent. At the same time, Harvey was also used by San Jose for seven games in the AHL. Now the 1.84 meter tall and 84 kilogram left-handed catcher is ready for his first European adventure. A safe support “We looked at a lot of personality profiles,” explains sports director Dieter Knoll, “and finally decided on Sam: He is a young goalkeeper with good statistics and a winning mentality, because he has already won the Canadian Junior Championship and in the American Hockey League convinced. He exudes a lot of calm and impresses with his excellent positional play. His style of play and his physique are reminiscent of some strong goalies in the ICEHL and therefore he has the potential to become a great in Europe.” Coach Glen Hanlon, who played something like 512 games in the NHL in his career as a goalkeeper, is of the same opinion: “At this stage of his career, Bolzano is the ideal place to take his style of play to a higher level, he has one winning mentality, as he has already won two championships, and always keeps an overview thanks to his technique and calmness. With him and Andreas we have two goalkeepers we can rely on." Harvey is ready for Europe “After the previous season, I was looking for a new challenge,” said Harvey. “Europe was not just an option for me, but a goal. I had several offers and together with my wife I decided on Bolzano. Bozen is a club with a long-standing tradition that fights for the final victory every year.” As a young player, he played two tournaments in Switzerland and had good memories from them, reports Harvey. “I saw that there is a lot of talent in European ice hockey and the style of play there is fast and exciting.” The experiences of the last few years in the AHL were also very important for Harvey: “I learned a lot there, it was a growth and the basis for a successful start in Europe. I want to continue to improve here, win as many games as possible and show consistent performances so that my teammates can rely on me. If we want to lift the trophy in the end, we have to act as a cohesive unit and find the right chemistry.”
