Ice hockey thriller: Bolzano is trembling its way into the playoffs

One thing in advance: The decisive point game in the ice wave was a reflection of the entire HCB season. Arrogance and collective blackouts led to Znojmo being completely unexpectedly 3-0 up at the first break, but then the Foxes showed morale and, thanks to a furious comeback, saved themselves into extra time and thus into the playoffs.

Before the last intermediate round game, Daniel Frank, who had recovered, slipped back into the squad for the White-Reds. Michele Marchetti had to take a seat in the stands, Viktor Schweitzer as a surplus striker on the substitutes' bench. The Czechs, who had already been eliminated from the playoff race, only fielded two foreigners.

Foxes completely out of character The game started as expected: the HCB went at a very high pace and pushed the guests onto the defensive. After just a few minutes, however, the tide turned – to the horror of the Bolzano fans. Znojmo now created chance after chance and consequently took the lead through Radek Cip in the 15th minute. But that wasn't enough, because the disaster really began for the Foxes. In the 19th minute, Josef Zajic directed a shot into the Bolzano goal, just seconds later Marek Spacek hit the mark: 0-3! The Bolzano cracks were shocked and completely out of sorts. Incredulous, they disappeared into the cabin for their first break. Frank and Egger shoot Bozen into the playoffs Coach Kai Suikkanen must have given them a real boost there, because after the restart they appeared as if they had changed. A kind of twenty-minute power play followed, whereby the disciplined Czechs were only numerically equal. Austin Smith & Co. missed one high-profile opportunity after the next. Everything seemed magical, especially when Frank directed a shot from Robin Gartner onto the underside of the crossbar. It wasn't until the 28th minute that things finally broke: Travis Oleksuk set up Dominic Monardo, who wonderfully flicked the puck into the corner. It was the starting signal for Bolzano's comeback, which Frank and Egger completed a short time later. The Merano striker scored from the slot to make it 2:3 and brought the ice wave to a boil before the captain sent the fans in the stands into ecstasy with a hard shot from the blue line. Now the HCB had the result that would be enough for them to advance.

As a result, the home team slowed down a bit in the third period and stopped the storm. The first priority was not to give Znojmo any chances to score - and the Foxes succeeded. However, the guests also closed at the back and both teams went into overtime. There, Gartner was the only one who awarded black in front of the Znojmo goalie. The decision had to be made in a penalty shootout. This ultimately turned out to be in favor of the HCB, as Halmo was the only one who hit the mark. It was the end of this ice hockey thriller.

On Sunday, March 4th, the fans of HCB Südtirol Alperia must have aged years in one fell swoop. At least those almost 5.000 who attended the last intermediate round game against Orli Znojmo. This was unbeatable in terms of excitement. In the end, Bolzano won 4:3 after a penalty shootout.
