Foxes lose to Klagenfurt in ice hockey chess

HC Bozen had to admit defeat 60-0 in overtime at the Klagenfurt Messestadion after a goalless 1 minutes. Rather than the two points for the Red Jackets and one for the Foxes, the duel brings a realization that is not at all unexpected.

This Sunday evening it became clear once again that the path to the ICE title this year can only lead through these two teams. Not because both teams set off offensive fireworks, but because they can stack their enormous talent within their own ranks in such a compact manner that there is hardly any opportunity for their opponents to develop. The two title contenders are surprisingly similar in terms of team unity, playing ability and physical presence on the ice. There are also two goaltenders who are undoubtedly among the best in their profession in this league. So it's no wonder that all three duels of the season ended with a one-goal difference and that the second of these encounters was decided in extra time. Findlay fails at the goal frame The most exciting game was in the starting third, when both teams set an extremely high pace and moved the disc with precision into their respective offensive thirds. Brett Findlay had the best chances for the guests. First he shot the target from an acute angle onto the cross corner post, and a little later he was denied by Klagenfurt goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm in a one-on-one. His Bolzano counterpart, Leland Irving, was also able to prove himself with excellent positional play and his usual quick reactions.

After the first break, a showdown developed that was more reminiscent of a chess game than an ice hockey encounter. The players of both teams worked with great concentration and were primarily concerned not to make any mistakes and to maintain their positions in both the offensive and defensive games.

The special teams couldn't change the balance on the ice. Although Bozen managed to survive five situations when they were outnumbered, they were also unsuccessful in a total of 10 power play minutes. The result? After a goalless 60 minutes, both teams had to go into overtime. In the three-on-three game, the goal block finally came down: the otherwise strong Nick Plastino was easily shaken off by Thomas Koch, paving the way for the KAC striker to score the winning goal. Koch moved unhindered in front of Irving and defeated him with a shot between the leg guards. At this point 61.21 minutes had been played. After that it was over.

The next top duel in Salzburg continues on Tuesday for HC Bozen. The White-Reds have the chance to further extend their lead in the table. After today's appearance, pursuer Fehervar is free of play until the direct duel on January 29th, Bozen will play three championship games until then.
