The Champions Hockey League adventure began for HCB Südtirol with the opening match in Jastrzebie-Zdrój (Königsdorff). The runner-up of the previous IceHL season went into the game as favorite against the Polish champions JKH GKS Jastrzebie. The HCB rarely lived up to its role as favorite. In the end, the White-Reds were able to celebrate a 3-2 win after a penalty shootout and a successful start. First things first: The new HCB coach Doug Mason was able to make full use of the team for the first time after difficult preparation (many national players were missing due to Olympic qualification, and some foreigners only joined the team later). The fact that the team was hardly complete in preparation was noticeable because the White and Reds were not very well-rehearsed. In the final third the game got tougher, both teams had two power play situations each: the South Tyroleans in the opening phase, the Poles in the second half of the final third. But these too remained unused, clear chances were rare - and when they did, the two goalies were there. Little happened in the three-on-three at first, Martin Kasperlik on the home team's side then received a 2+2 minute penalty for high stick.
