HCB bankruptcy in Croatia: Zagreb stops Bozen's successful run

Bolzano's coach Kai Suikkanen gave regular goalkeeper Leland Irving a break in the town of Sisak (that's where Zagreb currently plays its home games, editor's note) and let substitute keeper Jake Smith play from the start. Because the HCB coach had all the players at his disposal, he - like on Saturday against Fehervar - put Massimo Carozza and Tobias Brighenti in the stands as surplus players.

Cold shower for the HCB – Geiger equalizes Bozen got off to a classic false start and was behind after just 86 seconds: Zagreb attacker Armstrong made ideal use of a pass from Aviani and scored the early 1-0. The HCB found it very difficult to get into the game and had more trouble than expected against the supposed outsiders. Almost out of nowhere, the people of Bolzano equalized: Paul Geiger successfully completed an attack via Campbell and Catenacci - so the game was level again. For the defender, who had already entered the top scorer list in Fehervar, it was the second EBEL goal in the HCB jersey.

After the mediocre first third, Bozen came out of the locker room a little stronger and created several, some top-class chances. Because the Talferstädters always failed because of goalkeeper Rosandic or their own inability, the score remained 1-1. On the other hand, Zagreb became stronger as the game progressed and often appeared in front of the Bolzano goal - but here too, Jake Smith was the last stop. The scoreboard in Zagreb's alternative stadium ultimately caused the greatest excitement in the middle section: Since a double outnumbered team from Bolzano kept throwing the scoreboard out of rhythm, the game had to be interrupted for several minutes.

Mauldin's solo effort decides the game In the final third there were largely no notable moves and clear scoring opportunities. While Zagreb visually gained a slight advantage, the HCB made life difficult for itself with numerous penalties. With one man less on the ice, the Bolzano team finally conceded their second goal: When Brett Findlay was stewing in the cooler, Mauldin grabbed the puck and scored after a solo to make it 2-1. In the remaining ten minutes, the HCB threw everything forward and had the equalizer several times, but the Talferstadt team didn't want to score any more goals. Bolzano's third defeat of the season was thus sealed.
