Laibach dupes the HCB

Doug Mason's men knew that a difficult task awaited the Foxes. But they didn't put into practice what they had planned. They acted weakly and without ideas for long stretches and never found the right means against the strong Olimpija Ljubljana. Although the final score of 2:6 was a bit too high, it summed up the Foxes performance excellently.

However, the heavy defeat is not only due to the performance of the home team, but also or primarily to that of the guests. Ziga Pance, Sebastien Piche & Co. showed the perfect away game: Led by last year's Jesenice goalie Zan Us and based on a tightly staggered defense, the Slovenians repeatedly and successfully put the pinpricks. They punished the HCB mistakes consistently and, as in the AlpsHL, impressed with fast, disciplined ice hockey and technical sophistication. With these qualities, Laibach can annoy one or two big names this year.

The HCB, on the other hand, has to regroup and show its true colors on Sunday, when Orli Znojmo plays in the Eiswelle (18.30 p.m.). Especially since the Czechs gained a lot of self-confidence with a 6-0 win against champions Klagenfurt on Friday. While HC Bozen suffered a clear defeat, the other South Tyrolean team, HC Pustertal, was able to celebrate. The Wolves won 3-2 at Villach.

The highlights The fans have barely taken their seats when it's 0-1: Miha Zajc plays a precise pass to Aleksander Magovac, who takes advantage of the space in front of him and gives Kevin Boyle the losing end with a wrist shot - just 2.20 minutes have been played. Shortly afterwards, Dan Catenacci scored the goal he deserved with a Sunday shot into the corner. Now the HCB is entering its best phase: the Mason team shoots from all positions, hits a post through Mike Halmo, but concedes the 1:3. After a Piche shot, Ales Music is in the right place and pushes a backhand follow-up shot over the line. The Slovenians put the lid on it shortly after half-time when Simsic caught the hapless Boyle between the pads. A Halmo rebound only gives hope for a short time. Because with a double majority, the eye-catching Murphy makes everything clear with a perfect shot into the top corner. The score was 6-2 when Boyle cleared his box for an extra fielder. HCB Südtirol Alperia was surprised by cheeky dragons from Laibach on Friday evening and suffered its first defeat of the new ICE season.
