Next Wolves damper: Only Asiago is celebrating in the Odegar

The Wolves started powerfully in the venerable Odegar Stadium (in front of just under 800 spectators!) and were the better team. But only for a quarter of an hour. In the end, the South Tyroleans lost 1:2 and had to accept a bitter setback in the fight for the pre-playoffs in the ICE Hockey League.

The lead at the first third break by Dan Catenacci (14th) was the reward we deserved. But as if won, it went astray, because in the middle section the match turned completely around. Suddenly Asiago was in charge while the HCP incomprehensibly withdrew. Two goals within a minute were a bitter setback for the South Tyroleans, who are hoping for improvement after the second break.

Collective harmlessness on the offensive But far from it. What HC Pustertal offered was far too little for a team that really wants to get into the pre-playoffs. Asiago didn't need a brilliant performance to keep the Wolves at bay. At best they held back physically, but that didn't upset the home team. Instead, the Stellati were significantly closer to the third goal in the final third than the HCP was to the equalizer. And if a shot on goal did happen, goalie Justin Fazio was the final stop. The former Bolzano player put in an extremely strong performance and was able to distinguish himself with a catch rate of 3 percent. However, the Wolves cracks will also be wondering how they could have scored a goal in the first place. There was far too little going on offensively, the strikers were all disappointing across the board and miserably missed the few good chances (including from Harju). Nick Plastino and goalkeeper Tomas Sholl missed a great opportunity with the HCP.

The most important scenes of the game The Wolves start the game better and are dominant, but it is rarely compelling. Finally Archambault takes the shot, Catenacci holds out the stick and the puck fidgets in the net (14th). Even after that, the Pusterers remained in charge. The middle third begins with some power play chances for Asiago, but the Stellati cannot take advantage of them. Bruneck's Harju and Asiago defender Gios (a good deed from Sholl) missed good chances before Michele Marchetti equalized after a hustle and bustle (34'). Pustertal is shocked – and promptly concedes the second goal thanks to a Finoro shot (35th). In the final third the HCP is physically present, but nothing more. After 20 minutes - disappointing for Wolves fans - it's over. Previously, Asiago goalie Fazio was the last stop. But the national goalkeeper didn't have to put in much effort; the Puster team's attempts were too harmless.

The 1-2 defeat in Asiago is a bitter setback for the Bruneck team. With a win, the HCP would have taken a big step towards the pre-playoffs, but the bottom line is that there is nothing left - except that Asiago can now have legitimate hopes again. At the same time, Bolzano won 3-0 against Graz and overtook leaders Innsbruck. The Foxes go into the South Tyrolean derby on Friday stronger. The same cannot be said about the HCP.
