New Year's bang in Bolzano: HCB bends league leaders

Just in time for the new year, HCB coach Clayton Beddoes was able to count on the returnees of Brett Flemming (injury) and Patrick Wiercoch (he won the Spengler Cup with Team Canada). There wasn't enough time for Daniel Glira; the Puster player was also missing against Salzburg due to muscle problems. But it wasn't the HCB defense that was challenged at the start of the game, but that of the Salzburg guests. The league leaders were roused and took the reins, but Leland Irving prevented the equalizer: first against John Hughes, then against Janos Hari. Bozen made pinpricks, but missed the second goal due to a strong reflex from Jean-Philippe Lamoureux against James Arniel (15th).

Video referees in constant use New signing Dante Hannoun left a good impression. Arniel wasn't any more lucky either, his attempt also bounced off the crossbar and back into the field (45'). Shortly before, Filip Varejcka had done better. The 18-year-old German (he has already made DEL appearances in the current season) used a rebound to equalize 1-1 - after Irving had previously made an outstanding save against Brendan Mikkelson (44th). Sylvestre's stroke of genius is not rewarded The game now really picked up speed, the final phase became hectic and hard-fought. First, the people of Bolzano survived being twice outnumbered, then Sèbastien Sylvestre prevailed single-handedly and, lying on the ground and with a stroke of genius, failed again at the edge of the goal (55th) - what huge bad luck for the Canadian. On the other side, Mikkelson hit the crossbar with a blueliner.

Three seconds before the end, cheers erupted again in the ice wave, the goal siren wailed - but again Sylvestre's shot hit the post, as the video referee determined. So it went into overtime, where goalkeeper Irving kept the Foxes in the game with brilliant saves. No goals were scored and so in the end Bozen had the happier end in the penalty shootout: Colton Hargrove and Domenic Alberga scored for the HCB, but the Mozartstadt team always failed because of Irving. New Year's bang in Bolzano: HCB bends league leaders

A greatly improved HCB Südtirol Alperia defeated league leaders Salzburg 2-1 in the penalty shootout. In an exciting game in which shots from the post and video referees played a major role, goalie Leland Irving was the celebrated hero in the end.
