Pilsen shows the HCB its limits

After the first third, many a Bolzano crack would have had their heads buzzing. HC Pilsen broke over the ice wave like a hurricane and literally played the home team against the wall. After just seven minutes of play, the 2013 Czech champions were leading 2-0, with the second goal emblematic of the entire game: Stefano Marchetti was put under pressure on the blue line, lost the target and Miroslav Indrak finished dry just a fraction of a second later. Shortly before, Conor Allen had already given the Bohemians a 1-0 lead.

Just now, when the Foxes were about to turn the tables, Pilsen struck ice cold again. Denis Kindl let half of the HCB defense out and played Miroslav Indrak free, who just had to dust off. Afterwards, Bolzano had another chance to get back into the game, but Pilsen goalie Dmitri Milchakov thwarted Marco Insam's great chance with an incredible save. At this point, the EBEL champions were playing a double power play. After this had passed goalless, the Czechs continued with lively target shooting on the other side: Bolzano's goalkeeper Leland Irving was initially surprised by Milan Gulas at the near corner, minutes later triple goal scorer Indrak rounded him - and it was 5-1. Frank lets his fists do the talking At the start of the final third, Irving made room for backup Jake Smith in the Bolzano box. He was initially able to distinguish himself with several brilliant saves before Petr Straka gave him up for the first and last time. After that the game went on until Frank pulled the spectators out of their seats. Not with the second Bozen goal, but because he challenged Allen to a boxing match and thus briefly spiced up the game. The Foxes then avoided an even greater defeat. Standing ovation for the losers For their self-sacrificing performance, the HCB cracks received minutes of applause from the stands after the end of the game, because it was evident to every one of the 4.850 spectators that they simply couldn't beat HC Pilsen today.

The second leg will take place in the Czech Republic in two weeks. Then HC Bozen needs a miracle – i.e. a win with a six-goal difference – in order to advance to the quarter-finals.
