PART2 | Alex Egger: “I would like to get involved in the club”

Im Part 1 During the big SportNews interview we reviewed the eventful career of the former captain of HC Bozen, now we want to take a look at his career after his career.

Alexander Egger, did you question your decision to end your career again after winning the decisive final game?

One thing in advance: For me, it is certainly not the perfect time, as many people have quoted, to hang up my skates. It is very difficult to resign now, at the most beautiful moment. But the decision has been made and will no longer be changed. I consciously decided to focus on my family; sporting success is secondary.

“It’s not the perfect time to leave” So the championship celebration was also a farewell party. Were you able to hold a candle to the younger cracks at the party marathon? But sure! At least the first night I was one of the last three or four to go home. But I have to admit: I needed a breather or two in the days that followed. With how much melancholy you will Champions League draw pursue in Copenhagen? Of course it would have been nice to play against the big clubs again and get to know new cities again. But I didn't want to accept this incentive. Because over the course of the season the long away trips to the Czech Republic or Hungary would have been necessary again. By then the motivation would have disappeared again, also because my children would have had to keep asking about their father at home on weekends.

Let's focus forward: What future do you predict for Italian ice hockey and especially for HC Bozen? The HCB did everything right by joining the EBEL, but youth work was neglected for a long time. This has now been recognized and in Enrico Dorigatti we have found a competent man for this area. I see the club now in a good position. In general, the following applies to domestic ice hockey: We have to keep the young players and develop them at home. To achieve this, however, the youth areas need to be promoted more and good youth coaches hired. Have you already offered your services to the HCB? I told Dieter Knoll that I would be available if he needed me. I would like to get involved in the club. However, there is still time, let's see what the future brings.

“There is never a lack of work in agriculture” Can you even imagine life without ice hockey? I'm completely busy too, don't worry (laughs). I will continue to help out in my father's craft business and also get more involved in agriculture. Together with my partner I run a small farm including an apple orchard, so there is never a lack of work. And then there are my children, who are slowly getting to the age where something is happening all the time. I'm really looking forward to that.

Where will you spend your summer vacation? At the beginning of June, the family is going to Jesolo for a few days, in the classic way, and a vacation to Sardinia is planned later. I could easily imagine a city trip at the end of August - where exactly will be shown in the Champions League draw on Wednesday. But don't worry: I won't be returning to the ice. I just want to enjoy everything that comes with it, something I've been missing over the years.

Alexander Egger has been retired from ice hockey for almost a month. His life has changed suddenly since Game 7 of the final series against Red Bull Salzburg - and yet: the fastest sport in the world won't let go of him anytime soon.
