The German champions are too strong for Italy

As was the case on Friday in the 1-4 semi-final defeat against Augsburg, the Azzurri did not have their best line-up in the small final. In addition to Thomas Larkin, Peter Spornberger, Diego Kostner, Alex Petan, Peter Hochkofler and Giovanni Morini, Stefano Marchetti, Anthony Bardaro and regular goalie Andy Bernard, who was given a breather, were also missing. Justin Fazio was looking after the box - and he had his hands full in front of 350 spectators in the Würth Arena.

The Eisbären seemed inspired just 17 hours after their semi-final loss against EHC Biel. They had 28 shots on goal in the 0-2 defeat, but none of them found their way into the goal. That changed suddenly against Italy: the game was less than two minutes old when the disc was already fidgeting in the net. Yannick Veilleux simply hammered it from a tight angle and surprised Fazio in the near corner - much to the delight of the numerous Eisbären fans who made the 800 kilometer journey from Berlin to Neumarkt. After this early shock, Italy remained too harmless offensively and never really threatened the goal of Berlin's back-up goalie Tobias Ancicka, not even in three power-play situations. Things get hot in the final section After the first break, a hard-fought game developed in which the Berliners around superstar Marcel Noebels had significantly more of the game, but Italy were waiting for their chances. Such was the case with Angelo Miceli, who found the best opportunity after 31 minutes and shot freely a few meters in front of the goal, but Ancicka decisively extended his catching hand at the last moment. As the match became more physical, not to say more heated, the Eisbären struck again: Zach Boychuck, one of the most striking Berliners, came to the puck in the slot and uncompromisingly hammered it into the goal - 2-0.

In the final period, Kevin Clark made the decision after 79 seconds when he directed a razor-sharp cross from Jonas Müller into the net to make it 3-0. As a result, the eight-time German champions let the reins slip a bit, which is why Italy with Daniel Frank, Luca Frigo and Michele Marchetti came very close to scoring the first goal. However, the goal fell on the other side, as Mark Zengerle mercilessly took advantage of a careless loss of the puck by the Azzurri to make it 4-0. There was still reason to celebrate for the Greg Ireland team at the finish: Angelo Miceli took heart in the majority and sank the target into the top corner - the consolation goal and the final score was 1:4.

In the final in the evening, Biel won against Augsburg.
