15 of the 25 Olympic heroes were missing in Herning, Sturm had to fill the big gaps with young, inexperienced players. A sworn unit like the one in South Korea in February is therefore not on the ice. "This team was unique. It took years to get them together," explained Sturm, "now it's a new phase. It takes a certain amount of time."

Of the ten silver medalists in the DEL final, half canceled at short notice. “This squad came together quickly,” admitted Sturm, who had to improvise. Against Finland, the 39-year-old called on Düsseldorf's Mathias Niederberger in goal - as the tenth World Cup debutant. Its start couldn't have been worse: the first shot was a hit.

It took his front men until the eleventh minute before they fired their first shot on goal. In the second third, the German team improved - as did Niederberger. After Tiffels equalized, the DEB team dominated the action more and more. Krupp's opening goal was well deserved. The Finns, who had triumphed 5-1 against Canada the night before, were having more and more problems.

In Herning, NHL star Draisaitl was relied on: the Edmonton Oilers striker was involved in nine of the 16 German goals. But the 22-year-old couldn't keep up with the German team all by himself. “We had too many rejections,” admitted NHL defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, who as captain was unable to fill the vacuum at the top of the hierarchy.
