The World Cup semi-finals have been decided

The German national ice hockey team will play its first World Cup semi-final in eleven years on Saturday against defending champion Finland. This will be determined after all quarter-final games have been completed due to the tournament format. The Finns followed the Germans into the top four on Thursday evening thanks to a 1-0 win against the Czech Republic. Jere Innala scored the only goal of the game (33rd minute). The selection of the German Ice Hockey Association (DEB) had previously won 3-2 after a penalty shootout against Switzerland .

The second semi-final is somewhat unexpectedly between Canada and the USA. Curiously, all of the semi-finalists come from Group B, in which Italy also played. After their historically weak start to the World Cup, the Canadians surprisingly moved into the semifinals thanks to a 2-1 win after extra time in the duel between the top nations against record world champions Russia.

Andrew Mangiapane from the NHL team Calgary Flames scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute and caused a bitter disappointment for the Russians. With three defeats in the first three preliminary round games, the 26-time world champion Canada started a tournament weaker than ever.

The USA stayed in the medal race with a 6-1 win against Slovakia. Colin Blackwell (16th/37th) from the New York Rangers and Conor Garland (20th/59th) from the Arizona Coyotes each scored twice.
