For the first time since 1937: Sweden misses the quarter-finals

The former champion's team lost on Monday in Riga against Russia 2:3 (1:0, 0:0, 1:2) after a penalty shootout and therefore no longer has a chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Latvia. The Swedes, who last became world champions in Germany in 2017 and in Denmark in 2018, only won three of their seven preliminary round games in Group A. In 1937, the Swedes came ninth. The Russian selection is in the knockout round and can secure group victory against Belarus at the end of the preliminary round on Tuesday. A win after extra time or in the penalty shootout against hosts Latvia on Tuesday is enough for the German national ice hockey team to reach the quarter-finals. Because surprise team Kazakhstan lost 1:3 (1:0, 0:1, 0:2) against Norway in Riga on Monday evening, Germany only needs two points instead of the possible three for a win in regular time in the decisive preliminary round game. Newly promoted Kazakhstan missed out on a possible early quarter-final entry with their defeat against the already eliminated Norwegians and ended the group phase with ten points.
