Latvia turns to IIHF about Belarus

“We will call on the IIHF to consider another country instead of Belarus,” said Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins on Monday in Riga. The Baltic country of Latvia will organize the World Cup next year together with neighboring Belarus. The games will be played in the capitals Riga and Minsk. IIHF President Rene Fasel said just a few days ago that there are currently no plans to move the World Cup to another country. Latvia and Belarus won the 2017 World Cup with their joint application. The Ice Hockey World Championships were held in Minsk for the first time in 2014. Riga was the venue for the 2006 World Cup. There have been major protests in Belarus for days because of the presidential election over a week ago, which was overshadowed by allegations of fraud. Their goal is to force the authoritarian head of state Alexander Lukashenko out of office, who was declared the winner of the election for the sixth time in a row.
