After a penalty thriller: Russia follows Finland into the final

The Russian team defeated Sweden 2-1 (0-0, 1-0, 0-1) after a penalty shootout on Friday and is playing for gold again four years after beating Germany 4-3 in the 2018 final. World Cup runners-up Finland previously beat Slovakia 2-0 (1-0, 0-0, 1-0) in the first semi-final.

The final is scheduled for Sunday (05.10:14.10 a.m.). Sweden and Slovakia will play for bronze on Saturday (XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.).

In a close game between two ice hockey great powers, the Russians were unlucky with a hit on the post in the first period and then took the lead after just 15 seconds of play in the second period. Anton Slepyshev initially beat his opponent along the boards, then went around goalkeeper Lars Johansson and pushed in.

Only Sweden's captain Anton Lander was able to overcome the Russians' previously stable defense with a stunning goal (47'). Sweden then continued to push, but no further goals were scored in ten minutes of extra time with only three field players each. In the penalty shootout, 20-year-old Arseni Gritsyuk scored on his 16th attempt to give the Russians a stormy victory. Finns conquer Slovakia Sakari Manninen (16th) and Harri Pesonen (60th) scored for the favored Finns. Unlike the 6:2 in the preliminary round, this time the Northern Europeans had a difficult time against their defensively strong opponents. In the end it was enough for the first place in the Olympic final since 2006 in Turin. At that time, the Finns missed out on the gold medal with a 2-3 defeat against Sweden. Since separating from the Czech Republic, the Slovaks have not yet won their own Olympic medal.
