New national coach: These are the 2 candidates

The former defender from Toronto (Ontario) played 2001 games for the Wipptal Broncos in the 02/8 season and returned to South Tyrol in the summer of 2010 after retiring as a player. The former Great Britain international was in charge of the coaching bench at HC Neumarkt in Serie A2 for two years before he took over at Rittner Buam between 2 and 2012. With them he won the Italian championship title and the Italian Cup in his second season and then said goodbye to Germany.

Wilson's involvement with the Straubing Tigers was short-lived, which is why he moved to league rivals Nuremberg as an assistant coach in December, a month after his dismissal. The now 54-year-old was promoted to head coach of the Ice Tigers and was named DEL coach of the year in the 2016/17 season. In the spring of 2018, Wilson terminated the existing contract in Nuremberg and returned to North America for family reasons, where he took up the coaching job with the Peterborough Petes in the OHL and recently completed his 4th season.

Mike Pelino was also a defender as a player, but ended his playing career at the age of 25 and moved to the coaching bench a year later. Like Wilson, the Italian-Canadian comes from Ontario and was born on November 13, 1959 in Welland. And there is another parallel to Wilson: Between 2010 and 2012, Pelino was head coach of the Peterborough Petes in the OHL. Apart from Brock University in the CIAU, this was the only station where the now 62-year-old worked as a head coach. Otherwise, he was almost exclusively an assistant coach in his almost 40-year coaching career.

Pelino started his coaching adventure as an assistant coach in the 1985/86 season with the Toronto Marlboros in the OHL. For the next 10 years he supervised Brock University. After 2 seasons as an assistant coach with the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL, Pelino worked as an assistant for the Canadian association for 4 years around the turn of the millennium, but also led Team Canada to the Germany Cup in Hanover and the Spengler Cup in Davos as boss.

Between 2005 and 2009, Pelino was an assistant coach with the New York Rangers in the NHL. After a season with San Antonio Rampage in the AHL and 2 years in Peterborough, Pelino moved to the Russian KHL in the summer of 2013, where he has worked as an assistant at Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Avangard Omsk, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl and Bars Kazan for the past 9 years.

New national coach: These are the 2 candidates

After relegation at the World Cup in Helsinki, Greg Ireland's contract as Italy national coach was not renewed. Italy's ice sports association FISG began looking for a successor for Ireland some time ago.
