Sensational: Finland is world champion

There is no question that ice hockey is not just a question of individual quality and this became apparent once again during the World Cup in Slovakia. But the fact that a team like Finland, whose quality was so inferior this year compared to Russia or Canada, won the World Cup title is a real sensation. In a hard-fought final, the Scandinavians overcame a 0-1 deficit to win the gold medal thanks to a brace from captain Marko Anttila and a goal from Harri Pesonen.

The intense game started evenly. Oliver Kaski from the Pelicans Lahti missed a penalty early on during a short-handed situation (6th). Previously, Jerre Sallinen, who plays in Sweden, was fouled while running towards the goal. With a strong individual action, Canada's defender Shea Theodore later prevailed vehemently and finished unstoppably against Finland's keeper Kevin Lankinen (6th).

In the final, however, both teams showed an open and offensive game and also - untypically for a World Cup final - incurred a few penalty times. Anttila used one of the resulting outnumbered situations to equalize. After that the match became more spectacular. Both teams played bravely forward and had numerous chances. However, the Finns were rewarded in the final section and deservedly won in the end. The decisive goal was scored by Anttila, who had already scored the winning goal against the Russians in the semi-final.

Already in the afternoon, Russia won against the Czech Republic thanks to a victory after a penalty shootout bronze medal .

Sensational: Finland is world champion

Who would have thought that before the World Cup? With not a single seasoned NHL professional, Finland defeated the great Canada in the final and was crowned world champion for the first time since 2011.
