Shootout win against Germany: Switzerland is group winner

The Swiss lost their first point in their seventh World Cup game, but still finished four points ahead of the Germans in the Helsinki pool. In Austria's Group B in Tampere, the fourth quarter-final place went to the USA after Latvia suffered a 0-1 defeat against Sweden. Switzerland finished first in the preliminary round of the World Cup for the second time. In 2013, the Swiss also got 20 out of a possible 21 points, then won the quarter-finals against the Czech Republic 2-1 and only lost the World Cup final against Sweden. Now the USA will face the Swiss in the first knockout phase on Thursday. The Americans beat Norway 4-2 on Tuesday. The Scandinavians finished the tournament behind Austria. Slovakia secured their last quarter-final ticket with a brilliant 7-1 win against Denmark. The day before, the Danes beat defending champions Canada 3-2. Tomas Tatar played a major role in the Slovakian victory. The captain scored both goals in the first third to make it 2-0. Defender Simon Nemec, just 18 years old, scored one goal and contributed three assists to the win. Germany in the quarter-finals against the Czech Republic Germany will face twelve-time world champions the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals of the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland on Thursday. The Czechs lost on Tuesday evening in Tampere against World Cup hosts and Olympic champions Finland 0:3 (0:2, 0:1, 0:0) and are in third place in Group B at the end of the preliminary round. Canada will face Sweden in the quarterfinals.
