Victorious start for the Scandinavians and North Americans

The Swedes beat Latvia 3-2, group opponents Finland won 6-2 against Slovakia a little more clearly. The games in Group A were clear affairs: The USA defeated China less than expected with 8:0, Canada also had few problems in the 5:1 against Germany.

Sweden, the Olympic champion in 1994 and 2006, led 3-0 in the middle of the second period, but Latvia ensured tension until the end with power play goals from Villach legionnaire Renars Krastenbergs (37th) and Nikolajs Jelisejevs (47th). Linz ICE striker Andris Dzerins also played for the Latvians.

The Finns Harri Pesonen and Sakari Manninen each scored three times against Slovakia. Although Juraj Slafkovsky put the Slovaks in front with his first of two goals, Finland made it 3-1 with three goals in eight minutes in the first period. Slovakia never recovered from this setback. China “only” lost 0:8 Four years after the surprising silver medal in Pyeongchang, Germany started with a bitter setback. The Germans lost 1:5 against the stronger than expected record Olympic champions Canada and showed a largely disappointing performance. Leading player Marco Nowak had to leave the ice after just five minutes when the score was 0-0 because of a hard but unpunished check on Eric O'Dell's head. After eleven minutes, Germany was already 0:3 behind and only managed a consolation goal to make it 1:3.

In a parallel game, the USA had to deal with the Chinese. Many ice hockey experts had predicted a veritable debacle for China, number 32 in the world, at the Olympic tournament. The host country didn’t have the slightest chance against the Americans, but “only” lost 0-8. Youngster Sean Farrell (20) stood out with three goals and five scorer points.
