Hungary shattered Italy's World Cup dream

Gold and promotion for Germany, silver for Italy, bronze for France: with these results the Ice Hockey U18 World Championships on Ritten came to an end. Before the fifth day of the tournament, Italy still had a small chance of winning the title, but the Azzurrine can still look back with pride on their achievements. Even if the last game against Hungary was lost.

Italy took the lead after just six minutes thanks to the tireless Matilde Fantin (5.55). Hungary equalized just three minutes later thanks to a Pasztor goal from the tightest angle (8.55). Hungary struck in the middle third: First Mozolai increased the lead to 2-1 (23.38) with a shot that slipped under Girardi's pads, then Bahiczki-Toth scored from the slot to make it 3-1 (36.35). Despite many chances, Italy couldn't get close in the final third and had to finally bury their title dreams.

Norway is relegated, France takes bronze Norway said goodbye to the tournament with a win, but still had to accept relegation. The Scandinavians beat Austria 3-1 and have three points. Austria collected four points with one overtime win and two overtime defeats. The red-white-red hockey girls showed a weak performance. At the end of the second period, Norway was 8.04-39.39 ahead thanks to goals from Kristiansen (30.05, 3) and Haave (0), but Kutzer's follow-up goal (55.57) came too late for a comeback.

It was already clear to Germany before the game against France that they could no longer take the lead in the table. For France, however, it was still about the silver medal. But because the score was only 1-1 after three thirds, it was clear to Italy that the silver precious metal would remain on Ritten. For France, the point win meant that they could at least take home bronze - if they had lost, Hungary would have ended up in third place. After Bernoussi's lead (43.14), France were allowed to briefly dream of second place, but the equalizer by Gress (46.41) dashed their dream. It went down to the penalty shootout, in which France had the luckier hand.

I would like to thank the OK team, all the volunteers and the sponsors from the bottom of my heart. Without them, hosting this event would not have been possible,” said OC boss Barbara Tschager happily after the tournament and said in advance: “The Ritten will definitely apply to host a women’s World Cup again!”
