Quarter-final thriller: Germany throws Switzerland out

Korbinian Holzer had already been with the Germans back then, as had Andres Ambühl with the Swiss – and was now once again one of the most important German defenders in Riga. This time the duel was also intense, but not as heated as eleven years ago in Mannheim. Big disappointment for Switzerland The rivalry between Germany and Switzerland is enormous. Ice hockey is more important to the Swiss, and the runner-up in 2013 and 2018 was aiming for World Cup gold this time. With the victory they fought for, the Söderholm team caused a huge disappointment to their rivals because Switzerland saw themselves as the clear favorites and the DEB team stood in their way in a knockout game for the third time in a row. In Pyeongchang 2018, a 2-1 win after extra time made the miraculous run to the Olympic final possible.

The German cracks had not even ruled out the World Cup title for the tournament under the special Corona circumstances. After inconsistent performances in the preliminary round and only securing a place in the knockout round in the last group game, they are now one of only four teams left in the tournament.
