Chicago Blackhawks: The collapse of a dynasty

It's one of the most anticipated days of the NHL season Draft . On July 7th, the teams in the highest North American professional league were allowed to choose their new talents. But the Blackhawks announced the first bang hours beforehand. Alex DeBrincat, the 41-goal wing and linemate of superstar Patrick Kane, was shipped to Ottawa by management.

Chicago wanted an early lottery pick in said draft. That was already clear beforehand. Speculation was circulating about possible transfers of veterans Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, who are slowly getting on in years. But when it became known that Alex DeBrincat (24 years old), a future superstar and likely constant in the Chicago attack, had been traded for picks number 7, 39 and a third-round pick, there was a huge thunderstorm in the sports metropolis.

When 21-year-old center Kirby Dach had to leave for Montreal, it was clear to experts and fans: Chicago was on a sellout spree. Picks number 7 and 39 gave the Blackhawks Kevin Korchinski and Paul Ludwinksi, but they are unlikely to play a role for another 2 to 3 years. After not extending the contracts of Dominik Kubalik and Dylan Strome, Chicago will probably be one of the last places in the table next season, despite Kane and Toews.

After missing the play-offs in recent years, fans in the sports-loving city will continue to look forward to the next few seasons with uneasy feelings. After the end of last year Abuse incidents became known in the Blackhawks organization, this sporting low point is probably the next punch in the stomach for Blackhawks fans.
