The Stanley Cup visits Augsburg

At the end of his personal “Nico Day”, Stanley Cup winner Nico Sturm let the around 1500 fans in Augsburg dream of a really big coup. “German champions with Augsburg would also be something,” said the 27-year-old ice hockey striker on Saturday, drawing thunderous applause in the Curt Frenzel Stadium. However, that will probably only remain a fan dream. “Home never changes. “I feel incredibly comfortable in Augsburg,” the San Jose Sharks attacker continued on his visit home.

At the end of June, Sturm became champions in the North American professional league NHL with the Colorado Avalanche - only five Germans achieved this before him. The attacker then moved to the Sharks. Now the self-confessed Augsburg boy has been honored in the Fugger city. In the sparkling hall of the town hall, Sturm began his flying visit with an entry in the Golden Book. Gold leaf shone from the ceiling, and below the solid silver of the most coveted ice hockey trophy in the world. “I am in awe of it myself, even if I can lift it up,” said Sturm. Traditionally, every player on the winning team gets to spend a day with the Stanley Cup. Sturm didn't hesitate for a moment about where he should go: to his hometown of Augsburg.

The NHL triumph opens up new opportunities for Sturm. The robust winger signed a three-year contract with the Sharks. The previous salary of around $700 per season is likely to more than double. “I can be even better as a player,” said Sturm in the Curt Frenzel Stadium, where the second act was a conversation with young players and Augsburger EV fans.

And then there would still be an open chapter. “Finally playing for the German national team,” replied Sturm when asked about further goals. “I have been in contact with (national coach) Toni Söderholm for a long time,” revealed the 27-year-old.
