NHL Draft: German Seider as number 6 to Detroit

This makes Seider the second highest German pick after Leon Draisaitl, who went to the Edmonton Oilers as number three in 2015.

"I was shocked. I didn't expect that," said the 18-year-old defender about the big moment when his name was mentioned during the distribution of the young players in Vancouver. “My whole body was shaking. It was surreal. There was only a small percentage chance that I would be drafted by Detroit. In the end it worked out.”

The youngster from German champions Adler Mannheim spoke to 29 of the 31 teams at the so-called NHL Scouting Combine at the beginning of the month. According to Seider, the meeting with the Red Wings was the last - and at "a good 40 minutes" the longest. Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman wanted to know “every detail” about him.

Next week, Seider will first take part in the development camp in Detroit. Where he will play next season is still unclear. It is possible that the newcomer will initially be used in the farm team of the eleven-time Stanley Cup winner.

As expected, US super talent Jack Hughes went to the New Jersey Devils as number one. The New York Rangers then secured the Finn Kaapo Kakko, who was the only European to arrive earlier than Seider. The German was also the second pick among defensemen after Bowen Byram (Colorado Avalanche/No. 4).
