NHL: Golden Knights book play-off ticket

Las Vegas (SID) The Vegas Golden Knights have qualified for the play-offs in their debut season in the North American professional ice hockey league NHL. With a 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche, the new team booked its first ticket to the playoffs in the Pacific Division. The last time the Edmonton Oilers and the Hartford Whalers managed to make it into the play-offs in their first season was in the 1979/80 season. The Golden Knights are the 31st team in the NHL. The owner of the new franchise is billionaire Bill Foley, who cost $500 million to expand. Before the start of the season, the odds of the team from the desert city of winning the Stanley Cup were 500:1 among betting providers. The odds are now only 7:1. The New York Islanders, on the other hand, missed the play-offs for the second time in a row. The team of German national players Thomas Greiss and Dennis Seidenberg suffered a 0-3 home defeat against the Florida Panthers. Goalie Greiss and defender Seidenberg were missing from the Islanders' squad, but by missing the championship round they could now strengthen national coach Marco Sturm's team at the World Cup in Denmark (May 4th to 20th). The Los Angeles Kings celebrated an important victory in the fight for playoff participation with national player Tobias Rieder. The Kings won 3-0 against the Calgary Flames and jumped into the first wild card spot in the West with 91 points. In the East, the Washington Capitals around goalie Philipp Grubauer extended their lead in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers, but have not yet secured their ticket to the knockout round.
