NHL: Players' union agrees to restart on August 1st

The NHLPA announced on Friday evening that it had agreed to resume play from August 1st and, after four days of negotiations, signed the relevant contracts with the league. The previously valid collective agreements were also extended by four years until the 2025/26 season. “Today, the NHL and NHLPA can announce a significant agreement that removes the uncertainty facing everyone, provides the framework for completing the 2019-20 season and lays the foundation for our league’s continued long-term growth,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. Contract with clause The new contract also contains a clause that guarantees the players that they will be able to take part in the 2022 and 2026 Olympic Games. The NHL professionals were missing from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang after a dispute between the North American league and the World Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. “This agreement is a significant step forward for the players, owners and our game during a difficult and uncertain time,” said NHLPA Chairman Don Fehr. The 24 teams that will be involved in the restart of the league will start their training camps on Monday. 2 venues The NHL plans to resume the 2019/20 season in two venues. According to media reports, the twelve clubs from the Eastern Conference will meet in Toronto and the twelve clubs from the Western Conference will meet in Edmonton. The teams will travel to the so-called hub cities on July 26th and will be isolated there under the strictest hygiene measures. The Stanley Cup winner will then be determined in play-offs.
