Ovechkin among the 10 best: “These are big names”

Past Mario Lemieux, level with Steve Yzerman: The Russian Ovechkin improved to ninth place in the leaderboard with 6 goals thanks to a hat trick in his Washington Capitals' 4:692 win at the New York Islanders.

"It's something special. I made history. “That’s really cool, those are big names,” said Ovechkin after moving further forward among the legendary scorers. “Ovi” scored for the 2018 Stanley Cup winners to make the final score 1-0 (11th), 3-4 (46th) and 6-4 (60th).

During the week, Ovechkin had passed the Finn Teemu Selänne (684), now the Canadian Lemieux (690) was due. The next five players that Ovechkin can surpass on the list also come from the hockey motherland: Yzerman (692), Mark Messier (694), Mike Gartner (708), Phil Esposito (717) and Marcel Dionne (731 ). Everyone is within reach for Ovechkin, and there is no end to his career yet. “My contract runs for another year and a half, then we’ll see what happens,” said the 34-year-old.

The three-time world champion recently broke the 30-goal mark and has done so in all 15 seasons since the start of his NHL career. If he manages to do it again next season, he would be the sole record holder. Ovechkin currently shares the record with Gartner, who also scored 1979 goals or more in his first 1994 seasons from 15 to 30.

Befitting his status, Alexander Ovechkin has made it into the top 10 goal scorers in the more than 100-year history of the NHL professional ice hockey league.
