Victory in Las Vegas: Capitals equalize NHL finals series

Washington won the second duel with the surprise team on Wednesday on foreign ice 3-2, and the score is 1-1 in the best-of-seven series. The Capitals now have home advantage on Saturday and Monday, and the fight for the Stanley Cup only returns to the players' paradise on Thursday.

Washington goalkeeper Braden Holtby once again showed why he is currently preferred over German national goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer. Two minutes before the final siren, the Canadian held on to victory with an outstanding stick save against Alex Tuch when the score was 3-2; Holtby fended off a total of 37 shots. Lars Eller (18th), superstar Alexander Owetschkin (26th) and Brooks Orpik (30th) scored for Washington. James Neal (8th) and Shea Theodore (38th) were successful for league newcomer Las Vegas, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Knights from suffering only their second home defeat in the play-offs.

A setback, possibly also with a view to the further course of the series, struck Washington in the first third: Play-off top scorer Yevgeny Kuznetsov (11 goals, 14 assists) suffered an initially unspecified injury when checked by Vegas defender Brayden McNabb Upper body, the Russian held his left arm as he left the ice.

For Washington, part of the NHL since 1974, it's about their first championship title. The Golden Knights are already reaching for this triumph in their debut year; they could become the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup in their debut season. The last time the St. Louis Blues were in the final series was in their first season in the 1967/68 season.
