Italy defeats hosts Ukraine and wins Euro Ice Hockey Challenge

Italy celebrated their third win in their third game in Kiev. After the successes against Lithuania and Romania, there was a real “final” today against the Ukrainians, who were also still undefeated. Coach Rick Cornacchia, who had to do without the injured Insam and Gander, replaced Daniel Bellissimo in goal and relied on Nick Plastino in defense.

The Italians got off to a better start and took the lead after just two minutes with Anton Bernard. The hosts equalized immediately afterwards with Kasayanchuk in the majority, but a nice individual move by Vince Rocco in the 4.36 minute made it 2-1 for the “Azzurri”. At the beginning of the middle third, Toryanik equalized again. The match remained very evenly matched, with Benetti scoring for Italy before the last third break and Kasayanchuk, who was outnumbered five seconds before the siren, scored with a wonderful counterattack for Ukraine. In the 46.01 minute Italy took the lead for the fourth time with Giulio Scandella, but ten minutes later the home team made it 4-4. It stayed that way until the penalty shootout. Here Italy showed stronger nerves, Scandella and Sirianni took advantage of their penalties, while Bellissimo didn't allow a goal. It was Italy's second victory at the second Euro Ice Hockey Challenge this season.
