Italy's national team completes its first maturity exam

At seven o'clock in the morning on Thursday, the national players left their training quarters in Brixen and took their seats in the team bus. The destination is Budapest. The Azzurri want to usher in a new era in the Hungarian capital. The new head of the national team Lou Vairo and his assistants Stefan Mair, Ivano Zanatta and Roberto Scelfo are foregoing players with dual citizenship, the so-called Italos, who have often set highlights in the past, at the upcoming Euro Ice Hockey Challenge for the first time since the late 70s were repeatedly criticized. “The aim of this campaign is to promote the development of Italian players. In the future, they will have to do without the support of numerous Italos unless they represent a real quality addition to the squad,” explained Vairo after the first training session in Brixen.

Those responsible have set themselves the goal of igniting a new spirit of optimism around the national team. Ultimately, however, their hands were tied when it came to putting together the squad. Numerous regulars had to be replaced before the training camp, and now Luca Frigo and Vipiteno striker Patrick Mair are also out. They were replaced at the last minute by the two local offensive players Peter Wunderer and Daniel Peruzzo. There are a total of 19 South Tyroleans in Lou Vairo's squad.

Three games in three days

The Azzurri will make their Euro Ice Hockey Challenge debut this afternoon in the game against Poland. The first puck drop takes place at 15.30:14.30 p.m. The second match follows on Saturday at 18:XNUMX p.m. against South Korea, before Italy plays against hosts Hungary on Sunday. The game starts at XNUMX p.m.
