End of career? That's what Joachim Ramoser says

The season opener in the German top league took place on Friday. Just one day earlier, Joachim Ramoser left Deggendorfer SC at his own request after a knee injury he suffered five years ago. “I returned home on Thursday and want to take a break from ice hockey for the time being. It was my personal decision. “To be honest, I don’t know what will happen next,” Ramoser seems pretty perplexed.

The winger signed a contract in Deggendorf in May, where he was reunited with his former teammate Thomas Greilinger, who is now the sporting director. The agreement stipulated that Ramoser would complete rehabilitation in the small town in Lower Bavaria with Deggendorf board member Artur Frank and that the contract would only be valid once he had fully recovered. Home is calling “The operation at the beginning of the year went well and helped me too. Likewise the rehabilitation in Deggendorf. But I didn't want to stay there anymore and was longing for South Tyrol. I like being at home, where there is a lot to do at the moment. I will get involved there in the coming months,” explains Ramoser. He helps out in his parents' Lobishof, which he will later take over, and in his brother Max's new hotel AEON. “Work never stops on the farm, in the restaurant and even in the hotel. But I will continue to keep myself fit and continue the rehab soon. I don’t know where yet,” says the former Italy international.

He doesn't know whether Ramoser, who spent the entire summer in Deggendorf and is grateful to the upper division club for that, will return to the ice again: "I can't and don't want to say now: That's it. I don't want to think about ending my career, although I'm well aware that I may never be able to play ice hockey at the highest level again. The knee is doing well under the circumstances. I don't have any pain anymore either. But it’s still not enough to practice professional sports.” Returning to the Buam is an option The 133-time DEL player knows that - if everything goes according to plan - he won't be able to chase the puck again until January 2022 at the earliest. “The doctors told me before the operation that it would take at least a year for the knee to heal completely and be fully resilient again. In the last few weeks I went on the ice alone a few times in Deggendorf and did a few laps. But training with the team would have been out of the question,” assures the man from Oberbozen, who can certainly imagine a return to his roots: “If the knee allows it, then I would like to go back to the Rittner Buam with my old colleagues play. In any case, I’m not ruling anything out at the moment.”
