Narrow defeat for Italy in the World Cup test against Austria

The Italian national team had to make do without a large number of its regulars in the World Cup test against Austria in Neumarkt in the Würth Arena on Tuesday evening. Some big names from the “Blue Team” took their seats in the stands: Alexander Egger, Christian Borgatello, Dan Tudin and Giulio Scandella. In goal, coach Tom Pokel gave young Andreas Bernard his trust. Dave Borrelli also made his debut for the Italian national team. The first third was poor in highlights. Both teams acted very cautiously. After 6.45 minutes the guests were able to celebrate the opening goal. Martin Mairitsch netted the advantage with a precise shot. There was little to hold on to for Italy's keeper Bernard. The hosts then tried to score again. The block with Fabio Kostner, Nicola Fontanive and Matteo Tessari in particular showed some good approaches. But the “Blue Team” didn’t manage to score a goal. Austria went into the break with a narrow lead.

In the second half of the game, Italy acted more aggressively. Rob Sirianni and Trevor Johnson tried to overcome Starkbaum, but Austria's goalie was on the post. But Austria subsequently took control again and Ulmer forced Andreas Bernard into a brilliant feat in the 27th minute. Nevertheless, the “Azzurri” equalized in the 36th minute. Nate Di Casmirro made an excellent pass to Rob Sirianni, who put the puck in the goal. Afterwards, Italy, driven by the very eye-catching Diego Kostner, pushed the guests into their defensive third before a shot from Heinrich, who had a double advantage, hit the post in the last minute of the game in favor of the Austrians.

In the early stages of the final third, the “Azzurri” put a lot of pressure on and missed the lead with Perna. The attackers made their mark, especially when they were in the majority. Marco Insam had a goal on his hands after Anton Bernard brilliantly cleared him. There was little to see from Austria, but Manny Viveiros' team always remained dangerous on the counterattack. After a dangerous move by Wiedergut, Pokel took a timeout to get his team back on track. Italy continued to dominate the game afterwards, but the Austrians scored 2-1. Unterluggauer passed the puck into the slot and Kristler netted. In the final phase, Italy took the goalie off the ice for a sixth skater, and Austria even had to make do with one less man on the ice. But it didn't result in anything that counted; the guests only had a narrow victory. The next test match between the two national teams is on Wednesday at 19 p.m. in Neumarkt with a view to the World Cup in the 1st Division.
