Lazo and Demetz are moving to the Broncos

34-year-old Mark Demetz is no stranger to the Wipptal fans, as he was a red flag for the Broncos strikers not only in the 2 Serie A2013 final against Eppan. In the five games against the Pirates, Demetz only allowed one shot, namely TJ Caig's winning penalty in game one. Otherwise, he stopped an incredible 165 shots that the Broncos forwards fired from the game without conceding a goal.

The goalie from St. Christina can look back on a wealth of experience from 108 games in Serie A, 342 games in Serie A2 and 43 games in the INL, of which he played 79 games in the playoffs alone. Demetz proved in the past Serie A season, in which he was the regular goalkeeper for HC Gherdëina, that he is not yet a thing of the past. In the first phase and in the playoffs he had the best statistics of all local goalies: 92,6 percent catch rate and 2,36 goals conceded in the first phase, 94,5 percent and 1,5 GAA in the pre-playoffs and more than A respectable 91,1 percent in the four games against the vastly superior Rittner Buam are proof that the ambitious goalkeeper still has more than enough fuel in the tank. It was not for nothing that he was called up for the national team's two EIHC tournaments in Hungary and Austria, where he played against Korea and Slovenia.

The sporting director Egon Gschnitzer is very pleased about the signing of Mark Demetz: “With Mark we have an extremely professional and highly motivated goalie who will definitely help us. I was surprised when he called me and said he really wanted to add another season or two and he was very interested in coming to the Broncos. We didn’t hesitate for long because he is still one of the best local goalies and we now have the opportunity to sign an additional import player up front.”

Johnny Lazo should rotate in the attack

This import striker is Johnny Lazo, born in Winnipeg in 1989. He was a teammate of Adam Hughesman in the Western Hockey League with the Tri-City Americans. The lively center, who can also play on the wing, is certainly not a giant at 171 cm and 77 kg. But a look at his career shows that he can assert himself. 76 goals and 170 points in 217 WHL games as well as 55 goals and 132 points in 136 games for the University of Alberta Bears of the Canadian University League (CIS) speak for themselves.

For the Bears, he also scored eleven goals and 23 points in 20 playoff games as well as two goals in a total of five final games for the national college title, which he won with the Bears in 2014 and 2015. Multiple WHL Player of the Week awards and nominations to the CIS All-Rookie and All-Star teams complete the overall picture.

Gschnitzer said about the signing of Lazo: “Clayton Beddoes has obtained excellent information about Johnny and he will be a real reinforcement for us. Last year we had big problems offensively away from the front row and with Johnny we have an additional weapon in our hands. He is a fast skater, strong on the target, has a good instinct for goal and therefore has all the prerequisites to be a dangerous striker in Serie A.”

Sottsas and Braito end Serie A careers

The signing of Lazo also helps compensate for the departures of Christian Sottsas and Gunnar Braito up front, who will end their careers at least at Serie A level. Gunnar “Gunne” Braito played in Wipptal for the past three seasons and scored 51 goals and 2 points in 89 Serie A23 and 53 Serie A games for the Broncos. “Sotts” was on the ice for the Fuggerstadt team in no less than nine seasons and 392 games and has become a real Bronco during this time.

The WSV Vipiteno Broncos Weihenstephan announced on Friday the signing of Val Gardena goalkeeper Mark Demetz and Canadian center Johnny Lazo.
