MacGregor Sharp: “Bolzano, I love you, this is my home”

Thursday, May 8th. There is a lot of activity at Waltherplatz, the sun is shining from the sky. As soon as MacGregor Sharp appears for the interview with SportNews in a casual summer outfit and sunglasses, his eyes begin to light up. On April 16th, Waltherplatz was packed. With fans cheering for the Bozen EBEL heroes. “It's like it was yesterday. It was an incredible feeling to stand on the podium and be celebrated by the crowd. “I’m still struggling to find the right words to describe what I felt at that moment,” says MacGregor Sharp.

On Monday the center of the first line in Bolzano goes home. To Canada. “I'm doing well here in Bolzano. I met my friend Steffi here. I've already started preparing again in the gym. I’m a professional and I care about good preparation.”

The past

MacGregor Sharp is a withdrawn and reserved person. But when the Canadian talks about the EBEL triumph with HCB Südtirol, he gets as excited as a child. "It's incredible. This team has become stronger and grown together day by day. At Christmas I felt for the first time that we could do something with this team. I will remember Ziga Pance's assist for the winning goal for the rest of my life. It was a fantastic year and Tom Pokel is the best coach I have ever worked with,” continues the 28-year-old Canadian.

In Bolzano he found a great atmosphere that he found difficult to find the right words for. “People on the street recognize me and want to take photos with me. I'm proud to be something of a figurehead here. The people here are unique, as is the city. Living here is a wonderful thing.”

The pause for thought Sharp and his agent's phone has been ringing off the hook for weeks. “There have been offers from Germany (Schwenningen, editor's note) and from Austria. However, in these weeks I decided to switch off. I haven't made a decision yet, I will as soon as I get home. “I’ll meet with Mr. Knoll again before departure,” said Sharp.

MacGregor Sharp is currently, symbolically speaking, sitting between two stools. On the one hand, of course, he has to think about his career. “If an irresistible offer came along, I would have to think about it carefully.” On the other hand, he feels right at home in Bolzano. “My family loves cities like Bolzano, just like I do. I have been in Bolzano for three years and it is now my home. I have matured as a person and as a player. I made a lot of friends, people like me. Money isn't everything in life - at least for me. First and foremost, it's about you being happy as a person and being able to fulfill yourself. And in Bolzano my life changed,” Sharp continues.

The future On Monday Sharp will fly from Munich to his home country. He wants to spend his vacation there with friends and family and recharge his batteries by fishing – his hobby. Then he will decide.

MacGregor Sharp would love to stay in Bolzano. And if possible, bring his friend Matt Zaba (former Foxes goalkeeper, now Vienna Capitals) with him to Talferstadt. “It is not impossible that he will return to Bolzano. Schofield and Tomassoni (Sharp's roommate at away games, editor's note) would also be happy to play for HCB Südtirol again," explains the Canadian, who finally addresses a message to his fans. “This city has captured my heart. Bolzano is part of my life. When you fall in love with something, it's hard to let go. I would like to thank the fans from the bottom of my heart for their warmth and support. Bolzano, I love you.”
