The rising star Diego Kostner (HC Ambri-Piotta) Autumn 2019, shortly before the pandemic: South Tyrol's only representative in the top Swiss league was injured in a mountain village called Ambrì. His name: Diego Kostner. What seems like a short break turns into an endless problem. The then 27-year-old was out for the entire season and many were writing him off. But not his team. The man from Runggaditsch repays this trust – and how. Last year he had by far his best season, collecting 23 (!) scorer points in the highly rated NLA and leading his team's +/- rating, considering those players who played all the games. This year, Kostner continues these achievements seamlessly: in 12 games he has already hit the mark four times, making him Ambrì's second-best goalscorer. Numbers that make South Tyrol's currently best ice hockey player our newcomer of the week. The relegated one Hannu Jarvenpää (HC Gherdëina) Having come to Val Gardena with a lot of praise and an impressive curriculum, Hannu Järvenpää, head coach at the struggling HCG, is already being viewed critically. If you look at the current table situation (14th place), the HCG leadership has to say: rightly so. The Finn took over the legacy of his compatriot Joni Petrell in the summer. And a team that had to cope with the departure of points guarantee Matt Wilkins, but was otherwise strengthened in certain areas - such as by Max Oberrauch. However, the 58-year-old with many years of EBEL experience was unable to meet the resulting increased expectations. On the contrary: the HCG lost six of eight games, had the third-weakest power play and penalty killing in the league and had already conceded a total of 34 goals. The buck in all this is passed to Järvenpää. He cannot (yet) fully exploit the potential of his top players and, above all, cannot give the team a clear identity. Time will tell whether the Finn gets the hang of things or has to pack his bags early.
