The climbers Falcons Brixen, SV Kaltern (IHL) A South Tyrolean duo is marching up and away in the Italian Hockey League: The Kalterer Hechte and the Falcons from Brixen are tied at the top of the table with 5 wins each from 6 games. After high-profile departures in the summer, both teams were by no means hot contenders for the title. The personnel loss could be compensated for by real transfer coups, such as that of the two Virtala brothers in Kaltern, and a strong collective a la Falcons. What's notable is that while Brixen was able to easily cope with the loss of veteran Patrick Bona in the clear 5-2 win against Pergine, new players are also constantly slipping into the role of the main protagonists at Kaltern. In the 2-1 win in the top game in Cavalese, for once it was not the outstanding offensive players who were in the spotlight, but rather goalkeeper Daniel Morandell, who saved no fewer than 38 shots. Whether the falcons and pike can continue the current trend remains questionable, of course, but one thing is already certain: the skid cracks from the Eisacktal and the Überetsch deliver the most positive news from a South Tyrolean perspective so far in the still young ice hockey season. The relegated one The Corona confusion The less positive news includes the many game cancellations last week, some of them at short notice, in the AlpsHL and the IHL. Of course, the game plans drawn up at the start of the season cannot be carried out without postponements due to the corona pandemic, which has become more severe since then, but things cannot or could not continue like this. The most blatant example of the chaos in domestic ice hockey is provided by HC Meran, albeit completely unintentionally. The Eagles started the season with a win against Unterland on the first IHL matchday, but since then the puck has been resting in the MeranArena. Initially, 1 corona infections were reported in the HCM squad, now the necessary sports medical examination of the players is causing problems for which no appointment can be found. The result: Meran hasn't played a league game for 15 days. However, not only the Kurstadt residents are affected, but almost all teams in the IHL. Only two games were played as planned last weekend. On Tuesday evening, the IHL finally reacted and put an end to the distortion of sporting competition. The championship is now on hold for 40 weeks ( SportNews berichtete ). Now the question arises as to what will happen to the AlpsHL. The situation there is similarly confusing. Only four games were played in November, all others were postponed, some of them indefinitely. So far, the clubs are resisting an interruption like in the ICE or the IHL, but a revised game program or at least a clear guideline as to when teams affected by Corona have to play would be urgently needed. In any case, one thing is certain: If you don't want to damage the reputation of the league, the confusion in the AlpsHL must urgently be put to an end.
