Pat Curcio is the new coach of HCB Südtirol Alperia

Curcio is a coach with immense experience who knows ice hockey like the back of his hand. He knows exactly what a team and a club need to be successful. His great strength is the meticulous analysis of the respective opponent and his personality, which is also internationally recognized.

After a playing career between America and Europe (including in Italy with the Milano Devils in the 1995/96 season), he began his coaching career in 2003 - first as an assistant and then as head coach - with the Wexford Raiders, a team in the OPJHL (youth league in Ontario). Then in 2007 he jumped into the OHL as an assistant coach with the London Knights and in 2009 in the ECHL with the Utah Grizzlies. In 2010 he returned to the OHL to Salut Ste. Marie Greyhounds and then again in the ECHL as head coach and GM of the San Francisco Bulls (farm team of the San Jose Sharks), where he also held the office of president. His adventure in Europe began in 2014: first in Italy with Milan and Valpellice, and in the following two seasons he worked as assistant coach to Doug Shedden in the NLA at Lugano. With the Ticino team he reached the final of the Swiss National League in the 2015/16 season.

His profile corresponds exactly to the requirements of the club management for the coming season: international experience, support for young players, ability in management and in finding the right “building blocks” for this team.

“I am thrilled to be a member of the white and red family - these are the first words of the new coach of HCB Südtirol Alperia Curcio - it is a great opportunity to be able to help Italian ice hockey and especially the young players to improve . I believe and hope that my experiences from the last few years will be useful to me in leading the club into a new era. There are a number of excellent players in the area and we want to bring them to Bolzano. My goal is to teach my team a fast and varied game with young and motivated players who want to improve day after day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank sports director Dieter Knoll and his son Georg as well as Michael Dalpiaz, who gave me the trust to be able to lead such a renowned team. At the same time, I would also like to thank my wife Elouise and my family, who gave me their support. What else can I add…I can’t wait to get started!”

Tom Pokel says goodbye The Tom Pokel era at HCB is over. The club wrote the following in its press release: “The club management would like to thank Coach Tom Pokel and wish him the best for his future. Three seasons on the coaching bench, three years of incredible sporting success with a club, which he led to an EBEL victory and another two good placings. Coach Pokel accompanied HCB Südtirol Alperia in its first EBEL years by upgrading the foreign players and contributing to the development of the players who now form the skeleton of this team. Chapeau!”
